There were no rules and even if there were some rules, nobody was so inclined to obey the rules.
Actually, the Dead played for just 95 minutes, which, by their standards, is less than half a concert... and they finished at five past midnight, not really late. Of course John has many times (jokingly) said that one of the reasons he didn't like CCR's performance was because the Grateful Dead had played right before and put everybody to sleep, but we don't have to take that to seriously... I don't think any one band can be blamed for the whole program being late, it was more a question of (non-existing) organization...
